Hearing Aid Styles

When it comes to choosing the type of hearing aid that’s right for you or a loved one, the huge range of styles and brands to choose from can seem daunting. Knowing which specific style is right for you or which brand to trust can leave you feeling overwhelmed. From the most powerful Behind the Ear model to the nearly invisible Completely In the Canal style, we offer a full range of digital hearing aids to meet your needs. Modern hearing aids come with a host of advanced technological features including directional microphones, bluetooth/cell phone connectivity, simple volume controls, background noise cancellation technology and much more.

Below is an overview of the most common hearing aid styles followed by a list of the leading hearing aid brands.

Completely in Canal CIC

Completely in Canal (Cic)

Completely In the Canal (CIC) hearing aids are custom fit devices that fit right into your ear canal. Only a small part of the hearing aid is visible to other, and it’s more hidden than the ITE style which covers much of the outer ear. CIC styles are ideal for anyone who wants their hearing aids to go unnoticed.

For those who live an active lifestyle, CIC hearing aids have more than just cosmetic benefits. These custom made hearing aids fit easily under helmets or headbands. With almost no wind interference, CIC hearing aids use the natural curve of the outer ear to provide clear directionality and added amplification for the most natural sound. Since CIC styles sit right inside the ear canal, they are more prone to earwax buildup, and have to be cleaned regularly. CIC hearing aids do have smaller batteries with reduced battery life, so they’re recommended for those with mild to moderate hearing loss. Starkey, Signia and Widex all make exceptional CIC hearing aids.

RIC Hearing Aid

Receiver in Canal (RIC)

Receiver In the Canal (RIC) models are similar to BTE models in that part of the hearing aid still sits outside the ear. What makes this different is that the receiver, or speaker, is placed right into the ear canal. It’s connected to the outer portion by small, clear inconspicuous tubing. From mild to severe hearing loss, RIC hearing aids are more discreet than BTE models, and provide more natural hearing. RIC hearing aids are the most popular hearing aid on the market and are great for first time wearers and experienced wearers.

Behind the Ear BTE Hearing Aid

Behind the Ear (BTE)

Behind The Ear (BTE) hearing aids are hearing devices that sit outside your ear, and tuck away behind your outer ear. These hearing aids are powerful and equipped with advanced features. Nothing beats their directional microphones and spatial features that are designed for speech understanding and listening in every environment.

These aids also have room to house a long-lasting battery, so you don’t have to worry about running out of power. Sleek, well-fitting BTE products are perfect for severe or profound hearing loss, but are also recommended for children who are still growing, and for those who don’t have the dexterity to fiddle with a tiny hearing device.

Most hearing aid manufacturers create BTE models, including Siemens, Signia, and Rexton.time wearers. Our favorite RIC hearing aids come from Widex and Signia.

In in Ear (ITE) and Semi in the ear

The Ear (ITE) hearing aids fit all the components of the hearing aid into a small case that sits right inside your ear. This is much smaller than either the BTE or RIC models, and is custom made to fit your outer ear perfectly. Your ear may not feel as open as with a RIC hearing aid, but the closer fit means less feedback, and more natural hearing. ITE styles are a good balance between battery size and features, providing great amplification without sacrificing the features you want. Rexton, Siemens, Starkey and Signia all make ITE hearing aids.

CROS Hearing Aids

CROS Systems are a type of hearing aid designed to treat single-sided hearing loss. CROS, which stands for Contralateral Routing of Signals, uses a wireless system that is worn behind the ear or with a custom in the ear mold. CROS hearing aid systems pick up sound from the side with hearing loss, processes and mixes the audio data, and transmits it to the ear with better hearing. CROS hearing aids provide wearers with access to a wider and richer picture of sound.

If you experience a unilateral (one-sided) hearing loss, contact us at Ear to Hear to learn more about CROS hearing aid systems.
